Spam attack solved

Just before the weekend a rather nasty comment spam attack hit a couple of my blogs, this being one of them. I wasn’t alone as my friends Xuan and Belle also got hit. It seems the spammers targetted WordPress powered blogs so much so that Belle is considering switching over to TextPattern.

For me I solved the problem (fingers crossed) by installing Akismet and Bad Behaviour 2 plugins. I started with Akismet but that just moved the spam comments from the built-in moderation queue to the Akismet spam queue. Since I had to check the queue for false positives (real comments marked as spam) it took almost the same amount of time. Luckily Bad Behaviour 2 came to the rescue. The way it works is that it identifies suspicious behaviour like filling out a comment and posting it all within 5 seconds. Most humans take longer than that even for short comments so it marks it as spam and it doesn’t even reach the queues.

I am using it in tandem with akismet because if one or two spam comments do get through they won’t be automatically posted to the site. So if you are suffering and are looking for a solution install them both and blow a big fat raspberry to the spammers.

Yeah, no spam as yet which is cool. Let’s test how real comments get sorted.

I should try the under 5 second speed post? :P
