oh the pain

Oboeyasui.com morphs

The mini project I had, morphed into something different. I felt I could do something more with the domain, something more beneficial to the community and so I did. I asked for some suggestions from friends and with their ideas created a new site.

oboeyasui.com is like tinyurl except that you can specify your own shortcut. The site is in Japanese because it is aimed at Japanese web designers and bloggers. The service is free and will always be free. If you know of anyone who might find it useful please tell them about oboeyasui.com  You can also bookmark it on delicious or digg it.

It is in open-beta now. Test it out and tell me if you come across any problems.

Upgraded to WordPress 2.2

I upgraded to WordPress 2.2 a couple of days ago.  I lost my upload dialog box on the post page and it was a plugin (Flickr Photo Album by Joe Tan) that was clashing.   I disabled it and the upload dialog came back.

The main feature I am looking forward to using in 2.2 is a developer feature, the wp-config.php’s  WP_SITEURL and WP_HOME lines.  This seemly simple feature less me run test and dev WordPress installs on a XAMPP server with a lot less hassle.  I am saved the hassle of search and replacing a sql database each time I wish to sync up a live and dev install’s content.

DOM Scripting

Wow, if only all computer books were written in the same way. I received and am reading DOM Scripting by Jeremy Keith and although I’m only on Chapter 3 everything is snapping into place and just makes sense. I’ve always though of the DOM and DOM programming as something dense and complicated but since reading this, I’ve discovered it is pretty straightforward.

If you can handle HTML/CSS and have had *any* programming experience you can handle the DOM. The refresher on JS was most welcome and it beats all the tutorials I’ve found on the net. Will add more to this post as I read through the book.

I’ve also got its follow-up Bulletproof Ajax coming but it won’t arrive for another couple of weeks.

Oboeyasui.com (Mini-project)

I have a mini-project called oboeyasui.com. In Japanesese “oboeyasui ” means easy to remember. I registered the domain so that I could create a personal portal linking all the blogs/sites and other places you can find me on the net. For my Japanese speaking friends http://oboeyasui.com/ian should be easy to remember. I’m still trying to think of an English domain name that I can use in the same way for my non-Japanese speaking friends. Any suggestions?

I plan on adding a few other links or redirections using this domain. Like http://oboeyasui.com/ianphotos redirecting to my flickr photo page.
