Joelle Bacic’s Presentation at Design Matters
I attended my first Design Matters meeting on Tuesday. It was a presentation given by Joelle Bacic on using Garage Band 2 to put together songs. It was a great presentation as Joelle successfully pulled off the “show don’t tell” concept of teaching. I couldn’t put together a song if my life depended on it but she showed real passion on building a song not from dry well-worn formulas but by thinking about the characters in the song and the story being told.
One tangential thought went through my head as she used the story of the Three Little Piggies as the subject of the song she constructed in front of us. The moral of the story of the Three Little Piggies is that you should take the time and work hard to build a something with solid foundations and is structurally sound otherwise you’ll regret it in the future. I couldn’t help but wonder if it is the other way around for Internet projects. Sometimes you just have to get something up first, and then spend time improving on it. The Internet-age version of the story would probably involve the Big Bad Wolf visiting the pig who was building his house out of bricks first, to find that he could gobble him up because the house wasn’t finished. The other two piggies didn’t get eaten because in the time it took the Big Bad Wolf to digest his meal, they had added reinforcements to their own houses. Like I said the thought was definitely tangential
