Post-mortem – I’ve sold my iBook
I’m sure this will disappoint my new friend Belle but I’ve sold my iBook.
The main reason I sold it was to buy a Windows laptop. Even so I freely admit that it is a downgrade. I just need a Windows laptop at this point in time. There were some truly wonderful things about the iBook like the instant suspend and equally instant wake from suspend, superior handling of wireless networking and silent operation (the Sotec laptop I got is noisy as hell when the fan is on) also the iBook had excellent battery life. Having said that if I had had the budget I would have purchased one of the Panasonic Let’s Note laptops which are more than twice the laptop the Sotec is but alas also twice the price.
User experience wise the iBook is superior to the Sotec and most Windows laptops except one. Use of screen real estate, and that is a biggie for me. OSX just feels too cramped at 1024×768, it felts like I was working at 800×600. For this reason the initial plan was to replace the iBook with a Mac Mini and connect it to my 17″ 1280×1024 screen but that’s before our Thinkpad started to crap out.
I’m sure sometime in the future I will get another Mac but I might just wait until Apple puts a decent graphics processor into the Mac Mini, one that can take full advantage of CoreImage/CoreVideo that is built into Tiger.
