Focussed Productivity

GTD

Something’s been going round and round in my head recently, the struggle i have with productivity. I am productive but the thing is I’m not sure if I’m productive in the right areas of my life. For example, I don’t get round to replying to all the emails I need to, nor do I have the time to take as many photos as I would like.

There’s a common misconception that if something was important enough you would make time for it. This is totally not true as it ignores things like allotted time and energy levels. I’ve read and tried to practise First Things First but while I do see some benefits, they are patchy and disproportional to the effort required to follow the system.

The thing that started me thinking about this was a recent discussion on slashdot about the book and system called Getting Things Done. To be honest it intrigues me. doing some research there are quite a lot of advocates. Some even blog about it, sharing their experiences and tips. My curiosity has been sufficiently piqued that I’ve ordered the book. I write about it in a future blog entry. One thing that does worry me a little is that the bloggers I’ve encountered seem to rely heavily on technology to implement and use the system. I would rather have a system that can be made to work with just a simple notepad and pen. I wouldn’t even mind using a simple digital notepad as I do now but not half a dozen programs and plug-ins
