This is the first post on our week-long trip to Dubai. We took a Qatar Airlines flight which went from Osaka to Doha, Qatar and then double-backed to Dubai. The first thing that caught my eye was the screen shown in the first photo. Because I was putting our carry-on luggage into the overhead luggage bin I only saw it from the side of my eye. I did a double-take as I thought it read
“PAIN PROGRESS” which would have been slightly worrying.
The in-flight entertainment system was pretty amazing as it offered Video and Audio on Demand. You could choose which movie to watch and even pause it if you needed to go to the toilet. The main problem with the system was that it was retro-fitted to an old control pad in the seats so usability was compromised. It took a while to figure out which arrow on the pad was up and which was left and so on. I remember that some airlines had a SNES (Super Famicom) game system as part of their in-flight system, I think that retro-fitting the VOD system to those controls would be great.
We also figured out that the system was running under Linux. How? Well Rie managed to crash her system while watching Michael Palin’s Everest and it rebooted. It isn’t surprising as even though Linux is pretty stable, Rie can crash any of my systems just by looking at them.
The other few photos are of our approach to Dubai’s airport. As you can see there is a lot of sand. When you come into land at Belfast International Airport you are struck by the patchwork of green fields. It is the same for Dubai, except you substitute sand for grass.
The next post will be about the best thing about our trip to Dubai, the people we met!

The stuff you notice and the comments are just so funny. the “Rie can crash any of my systems just by looking at them.” part made me literally laugh out loud. Looking forward to more photos dood. I bet the trip changd how you looked at things. I am so envious. My mum is in South Africa right now. I seriously need to go somewhere different! I already feel too at home in Tokyo!
Alisa,
Thanks for dropping by, always nice to read a comment by you. I’ve posted a few more photos including one of a couple from South Africa. Really nice couple and they have a lovely son.
If you’re looking for somewhere different then you could give Dubai a try. It really is different. I’ll be covering more about my general impressions in the next post about Dubai.
Any idea of whether or not you’ll be dropping by Osaka in the near future?
