Brief Vitalist (GTD) Review

GTD

I’ve been trying out Vitalist, for GTD on the web. Here’s my 5 minute run-down on what I think of it.

Pros:

  • Maps to GTD very well, and let’s you choose how to view N/As (by Context or Project)
  • Handles the Inbox concept well, love the email item to Inbox
  • Ticklers are handled fairly well too but of course for some physical reminders it can’t help much
  • Free version available (plus paid for version is reasonably priced)
  • Responsive tech support

Cons:

  • Slow, because lack of AJAX. I don’t usually argue strongly in favour of more AJAX but in almost all cases in Vitalist a click causes a big reload. Naturally it feels like it takes forever.
  • Some basics like drag and drop are lacking. I would love to drag items from the Inbox into a context or into a project, but instead you have to go and edit the item which because of point one is slooooowww
  • Non-clickable headings like contexts, to filter on context or project you have to select them from the side bar.
  • Can’t bookmark filters, you can’t access a certain project or context directly.
  • No intelligence in the Inbox form (something like the input box from 30Boxes would be so so so good here)

I’ll stick with Vitalist a little longer to see if it develops. I’ll sign up for the paid version once some or most of the cons listed above are fixed. It really would be a good deal $5 a month, but I am not so interested in the current difference/extras, I just want a smoother experience.

True experience: I’ve had two thoughts in my mind, and while I waited for the Inbox to reload after I entered the first one, the second one vanished from my head.
